Mason's (F Morley & Co) Ironstone Platter hand painted Chinoiserie, Ca 1850

About

This is a good large English ironstone platter by F Morley (Mason's Ironstone) from the mid-19th century. It was manufactured by Francis Morley & Co. of Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire, England. Francis Morley bought the Mason's Ironstone designs, moulds etc. After Charles James Mason was declared bankrupt in 1848 hence the use of the Mason's crown mark. This company subsequently became Morley and Ashworth, who then went on to trade as Mason's Ironstone again later on in the 19th century. The pattern is a typical bold Chinoiserie design with a bird chasing an insect in a floral setting among rocks, the pattern first being printed then hand-painted with bright enamels and some hand gilding. The base shows the Mason's crown with a 3/1090 hand-painted in red, the 1090 being the pattern number. The base also carries an impressed mark of the manufacturer; F. Morley and Co. We date this piece to the Mid 19th Century, Circa 1850.
