About
A fine and impressive pair of antique George IV English sterling silver meat platters; an addition to our silver dining collection.
These fine antique George IV sterling silver meat platters have an oval shaped incurved form with a sunken oval central well.
The well of each playyer is plain and unembellished.
The rims of these impressive platters are ornamented with applied gadroon decorated borders, accented with leaf motifs at each incurve.
One side of each platter is embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved marital coat of arms*, surmounted with a baronial coronet and above the Rolle family motto ‘Nec rege, nec populo, sed utroque’ - Neither for king nor people, but for both.
* The arms are those of the families of Rolle and Trefusis, commemorating the second marriage of Baron John Rolle to The Honourable Louisa Trefusis on 24th September 1822.
John Rolle was the first and last Baron Rolle (born 16th October 1756 died 3rd April 1842). Louisa Trefusis (born circa 1794 died 20th November 1885), was the daughter of Robert George William Trefusis, 17th Baron Clinton, of Maxtock, Warwick.
