18th Century Polychrome Faience Lobed Platter

About the Item

This early 18th century tin glazed earthenware platter was made by the Hannong ceramics factory in Strasbourg, France. Hannong was founded in 1721 by Charles-François Hannong and remained in the family until closing in 1780. Faience produced in the Strasbourg region during the period is characterized by distinctive shades of blue, green and iron red achieved through a high temperature firing process known as grand feu. The high temperatures in the kiln caused green hues to bleed into the surrounding opaque glaze while red colors often exhibit a rough texture and are slightly raised from the otherwise smooth surface. This large lobed platter features grand feu polychrome decoration in the Rouen style with a central medallion consisting of a basket of fruits set amidst flowers and foliage. The shoulder of the platter is finished with a lambrequin végétalisé border. The underside of the platter's canted sides are also painted with large floral bouquets which complement the decoration found on the face of the piece. The platter is in good original antique condition with no repairs or restorations. There are edge chips to the rim as well as irregularities in the glaze commonly found in antique faience, including skips and pops. As seen in the accompanying photos, the piece exhibits overall general wear related to age and use including chips/abrasions to the glaze at the rim as noted above and crazing on the front and back of the piece. The back of the platter bears three circular stilt marks and three pin bar contact scars which are a result of the production process and were incurred when the platter was removed from stands within the kiln. The foot of the platter bears the initials F.L. as well as a series of numbers and the remnants of a paper label. The rim is pierced with two holes intended for suspending the platter from the wall and retains the looped wire hanging device which was in place when the item was found. It should be noted that a slightly smaller version of this example can also be found in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts as part of a larger group of important Strasbourg pottery and porcelain bequeathed by Mrs. John P. Rutherfurd in memory of her father. This ceramic platter displays beautifully and would be a wonderful addition to a collection of antique faience. A lovely piece.
