$799

About

From the Dixon, Phillips & Co. pottery works in Sunderland, County Durham, England, circa 1834-1865, an earthenware transfer printed platter. Unusual for the color, the platter is underglaze printed in brown on a creamy white body in the 'Australian' pattern. The British were colonizing Australia at the time this piece was made. A romantic chinoiserie scene, the central image features Gothic buildings with pillars and towers, two figures in a sailboat on a river, and two deer on the shore. The border shows alternating panels of birds in a wicker basket, tall urns with flowers, and an urn surrounded by fruit, on a shaped rim. Showing both a printed and an impressed makers mark. Measures: 17 in. L x 13.5 in. W x 1.5 in. H In excellent antique condition, the expected light wear on the verso.
