$1,400

About

Art Deco 20th Century Limited Glassware, Fiftieth Anniversary June 15, 1952. Unused in Original Box Rare set of seven signed Libbey glasses in original mailing box. One missing. Henry Dreyfuss designed logo in gold on each glass. Original Libbey box measures 14" wide x 8" deep x 6" tall The 20th Century Limited traces its history back to 1902 when it was originally inaugurated that year between New York and Chicago (the Pennsy began running a similar plush train between the two cities that year as well; known as the Pennsylvania Special it was renamed the Broadway Limited in 1912). For the first 30 years both the Limited and Broadway were quite conservative and changed little aesthetically, using standard heavyweight passenger equipment and traditional steam locomotives. However, when the streamliner craze took root in the 1930s everything changed. The New York Central was the first of the rivals to begin dabbling in the new concept. During 1936 it rebuilt and modernized heavyweight cars (taking a cue from the B&O) for the new Mercury, running between Detroit and Cleveland. In 1938, Industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss was commissioned by the New York Central to design streamlined train sets in Art Deco style, with the locomotive and passenger cars rendered in blues and grays (the colors of NYC). The streamlined sets were inaugurated on June 15, 1938.
