Samuel Alcock & Co. Strawberry and Grape Leaf Plate, England, circa 1850

About the Item

A strawberry and grape leaf plate, from Samuel Alcock & Co, Burslem, Staffordshire, England, circa 1850. A central grape leaf is shown with a vine border, along with purple bunches of grapes and the berries and blossoms of the strawberry plant. The bold color and glazing technique is distinctive to Alcock majolica pottery. The mottled turquoise blue, green and brown glazing to the verso is also a hallmark of Alcock. These plates have very bold coloring and are considered scarce. Measures: 9.0 in. diameter x 1.0 in. height. Marked with the Beehive, SA & Co. Multiple plates are available, each showing losses to the rear footings. The plates sit soundly without wobbling. One plate has a small rim bite, not seen on the front.
