EF Bodley Staffordshire Dead Game Plates, a Hamburgh Fowl and Grouse, circa 1875

A pair of porcelaneous plates by Edward F. Bodley, Burslem, Staffordshire, England, circa 1875 – showing The Grouse and The Hamburg Fowl. Beautiful in a game room, entry hall, pantry, or kitchen. A central hand painted image of the dead game bird, shown ready to be dressed by the cook. Painted in the trompe l’oeil manner popular during the Victorian era, the Fowl hangs from a blue ribbon, the Grouse lies on a table. Both show shadowing used to great effect. A gilded scallop edging is applied to the rim. The verso shows a faint impressed mark, BODLEY. The type of bird, and the painters number are hand painted in red oxide. Also marked Wilhelm & Graef, wholesale china and glassware importers at Broadway & 26th St. in New York City from 1873-1900. Measures: 8.75 inches in diameter x .75 inches height Excellent antique condition, light utensil marking.
