About

France, c. 1775 Faience, marked on the base with the heraldic lily, the manufactory mark of Sceaux. The manufactory was especially known for its japonising decorations. But such original trompe-l'oeil objects also met the taste of the 18th century. The high quality of the workmanship and the naturalistic painting are in no way inferior to comparable porcelain objects and bear witness to the popularity of of such display dishes as part of festive table decorations. These two tureens have survived as counterparts in private ownership.
