US$825

About

A French Revolution tin-glazed earthenware dish, made in Nevers, circa 1790. A hand painted motto reads in French, “tous les méchants sont buveurs d’eau – cést bien prouvé par le déluge” Roughly translating to “All of the wicked are drinkers of water, well proven by the flood” Called faïence parlante or faïence patriotique, dishes and bowls painted with images or mottos of the French Revolution (1789-99) reflected the political allegiances of those who displayed these pieces in their homes. Hand painted with a geometric border on the scalloped rim. The palest blue glazing on the verso. Measures: 10 in. diameter x 1.25 in. height Very good antique condition, the expected surface wear and darker crazing, the usual fritting to the rim.
