About Bitossi (Manufacturer)
Like a Fellini movie, the ceramics of this famed Italian company embody a creative spectrum that ranges from the playful and earthy to the high-minded and provocative. Based in Florence, Bitossi Ceramiche draws on craft traditions that date back to the 1500s. These find expression in the artisanal vases and animal figures by the firm’s longtime art director Aldo Londi, as well as the colorful, totemic vessels designed by the high priest of postmodernism, Ettore Sottsass.
The company was incorporated by Guido Bitossi in 1921, though the family began making art pottery in the mid-19th century. In the 1930s, Londi came aboard, bringing with him a mindset that respected time-honored craft, yet looked also to the future. On the one hand, Londi’s perspective fostered the making of Bitossi’s popular whimsical animal figures, hand-shaped and -carved and finished in a rich azure glaze known as “Rimini Blue.”
But with his other hand, Londi reached out to thoughtful, experimental designers such as Sottsass. Starting in the 1950s, some 20 years before he founded the Memphis Postmodern design...

Iconic ceramic "Buccheri" saucers with a small base (2 pieces); the “bucchero” is a type of black and shiny pottery, often fine and very light, produced by the Etruscans to make domestic furnishings and decorative objects; the "bucchero" was used in Etruria from the second quarter of the 7th century BC-the first half of the 5th century BC; the black monochrome integral is the most evident feature of this type of pottery and the coloring was obtained through a particular firing; the term "bucchero" comes from the Castilian "bùcaro", with which they defined some vases arrived from South America more or less in the same period of the first findings in Etruscan archaeological sites. In the "bucchero" is black both the mixture and the surface, which is shiny and compact. The color is not obtained by painting but thanks to a special firing process in the absence of oxygen, which prevents the chemical transformations of oxidation that make it take on the typical orange coloring to the iron ores contained in the clay. State of conservation: some closed pass-through fêlures on the cup, barely visible on the outside. Some use chips on the edge of the lid, two of which are more marked.
From about the mid-sixteenth century, the puerperal soup tureen or puerperal cup became one of the most popular wedding gifts in central Italy. As an auspicious symbol, it replaced the birth table (“desco da parto”) which, on the occasion of high-ranking marriages, from the thirteenth century, had been painted by famous artists, especially in Tuscany.
In France this same tureen is called "écuelle de mariée", as it is given to spouses as a sign of fertility.
During the eighteenth century this custom spread even outside Italy to all social levels. Depending on availability and rank, it was made of different materials: precious metals, maiolica, porcelain, glass, pewter, etc.
Beginning in the mid-twentieth century, the custom of this symbolic homage gradually disappeared, although famous designers such as Gio Ponti and Giuseppe Gariboldi, even as recently as the 1940s, revisited a model of a small puerperal soup bowl for the Ginori and, also in Italy in 1940, in a national competition for young potters, one of the themes of the test was indeed a modern model of a puerperal cup as an auspicious gift.
This particular cup was also called a "service cup" or "puerperal vase" or "stuffed cup" - the windows were sealed with straw to prevent drafts of air for women in labor.
In the eighteenth century the line of the puerpera cup was simplified, so much so that it took the form of a small tureen with two handles - the typical broth cup...
