Minton Majolica Aubergine-Ground 'Marochetti' Cistern, Mid-19th Century

Recorded as shape no. 719, designed by Carlo Marochetti. In the Italian Renaissance taste, of oval form flanked by bifurcated snake handles with acanthus terminals, the rim interior applied with grape leaves, the exterior with ivy interrupted by central gaping horned animal masks, a band of lappets and scrolling green foliage below, raised on four paw feet, the interior in lavender-blue. Baron Carlo Marochetti (1805-1867) was an Italian sculptor trained in Paris and Rome specializing in figures. He moved to Britain in 1848 and is noted for executing numerous figural works, including commissions of the British Royal family. His equestrian bronze of Richard Coeur de Lion stands today outside the Palace of Westminster, London. Circa 1849 he began visiting Minton frequently and producing designs for the factory. Monumental Renaissance style designs by Marochetti were exhibited at both the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition, London and at the 1855 Exposition Universelle, Paris. Condition: Presents well overall, in good decorative condition. Some scattered small nicks, chips, and losses to the edges and highpoints. A few scattered hairline cracks around the edges and to the rope decoration around the interior. This piece is offered by Christie's. Please note: this item will not be available for shipping until April 30, 2019.
