About the Item
This is a beautiful large Platter or meat plate by Copeland (formerly Spode) in a very decorative floral pattern No. 8036, England, dating to circa 1850.
The piece is well potted as a large rectangular plate or platter with bevelled corners. It is made of Earthenware pottery.
The pattern is carefully hand-painted, over-glaze with typical bold enamels over an under-glaze transfer printed outline. This pattern is Spode's Ship Border Pattern with a Floral Centre and is illustrated on a Dinner Plate on Page 58 of the book; Spode & Copeland by Steven Smith, published by Schiffer.
The base carries various marks; the impressed curved COPELAND around a Crown, an underglaze blue R , an impressed 4 and a a painters mark in red with the pattern no. 8036, all dating this piece to the mid 19th century, circa 1850.
Overall a very distinctive large platter for use or display.
