Mid 19th C Copeland / Spode Large Platter or Meat Plate pattern 8036, Ca 1850

About the Item

This is a beautiful large Platter or meat plate by Copeland (formerly Spode) in a very decorative floral pattern No. 8036, England, dating to circa 1850. The piece is well potted as a large rectangular plate or platter with bevelled corners. It is made of Earthenware pottery. The pattern is carefully hand-painted, over-glaze with typical bold enamels over an under-glaze transfer printed outline. This pattern is Spode's Ship Border Pattern with a Floral Centre and is illustrated on a Dinner Plate on Page 58 of the book; Spode & Copeland by Steven Smith, published by Schiffer. The base carries various marks; the impressed curved COPELAND around a Crown, an underglaze blue R , an impressed 4 and a a painters mark in red with the pattern no. 8036, all dating this piece to the mid 19th century, circa 1850. Overall a very distinctive large platter for use or display.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Very little wear, enamels bold and bright. Very tiny nibble to rim edge- very hard to see, NO other Damage, NO Restoration.

    This is a beautiful plate in the Chinese inspired pattern number 4089, produced by the Copeland - Late Spode factory and made of earthenware pottery called Pearl-ware, in the mid 19th century, circa 1850. This plate is well potted with a recessed rim. The pattern is transfer printed under-glaze in cobalt blue, then carefully hand painted in bold coloured enamels over-glaze in Gilt Heightened, Rare Pattern Number '4089' which Depicts Oriental Flowers including Bamboo, Peonies and Prunus Blossom in a garden setting with insects.
