Mason's Ironstone Hydra Jug or Pitcher in the Bandana Pattern, circa 1870

This is a very good hydra jug or pitcher decorated in the Bandana pattern and made by Mason's Ironstone, England in the 19th century, circa 1870. The jug is octagonal in shape with the snake handle. These jugs were made in a range of sizes, varying from a small of under three inches high to large ones at over 7.5 inches high. This is a larger mid-size jug of 6 inches height. This jug has one of the very decorative, rarer and sought after chinoiserie influenced patterns called "Bandana" as illustrated on various pieces on page 169 of "Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares" by Geoffrey Godden, published by The Antique Collectors' Club. The pattern would have been transfer printed in black then hand painted with shades of gold, green, red and black. The base of the jug has an angular crown mark and banner, with Mason's above, printed in black, with B 9494 & a "2" below in iron red which relates to the painter or pattern series. This jug dates to the mid-19th century, circa 1870.
