About
A large hand painted Majolica terracotta ceramic dish with sailboat created by Jerome Massier for the Vallauris Factory on the French Riviera, circa 1940. The center of the terracotta plate has a hand carved five masted ship, well defined and accompanied by seabirds. Light blue-green majolica glaze decorates the ship, sea and birds, as well as a band inside the rim. A wavy brown strip encircles the maritime scene and is echoed on the wide rim, which has notches painted in the blue-green glaze. Stamped on the back "J.Massier Vallauris", used from 1930-1953.
