Goldscheider Figurine 'Aida' by Josef Lorenzl, Vienna, around 1925
About the Item
Depiction of a standing lady, proudly looking to the side in oriental garb. She is wrapped in a large beige cloth that extends to the floor, the front is decorated with a stylized, gray-shaded flower and tendril pattern and covers her hair, held in place by a yellow hair band. Underneath, she wears harem pants, held in place by a belt made of yellow ribbons, to match the tight bustier hung with chains.
On a black, cambered, stepped oval base.
The figure was inspired by the famous opera 'Aida' by Giuseppe Verdi, which tells the fate of the odalisque Aida, an Ethiopian king's daughter who was kidnapped as a hostage.
Designed by Josef LORENZL (1892 - 1950), one of the most important designers who worked for the Goldscheider manufactory in the period of 1920 - 1940.
