Georgian Pair Mason's Ironstone Side Plates Gilded Basket Japan Pattern, Ca 1815

US$595.41per set

About

This is a good early pair of Mason's Ironstone pottery side plates, hand painted in the very decorative gilded basket Japan pattern, produced by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, in the George 111rd period, circa 1813-1820. The plates are circular with a notched indented rim. These plates are beautifully hand decorated in one of Mason's most beautiful chinoiserie patterns, called Basket Japan, which is one of Mason's most collected and striking patterns. The pattern is well hand painted, over-glaze in bright enamels of cobalt blue and burnt orange all in varying shades, possibly over an under-glaze printed outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 103 of Mason's Pattern book published by The Mason's Collectors' Club One base has the circular impressed mark "PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA" and the other is unmarked as was sometimes the case but is definitely Mason's, both dating to the earliest period, circa 1813-1820 as ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period. These plates exhibit the quality and boldness of the hand painting that is seen on the early Mason's pieces.
