Georgian Mason's Ironstone Tureen and Lid and Stand Japan Basket Pattern, C 1820

US$1,375.69per set

About

This is a very good ironstone tureen, complete with lid and base stand or plate, all in the Basket Japan pattern and made by Mason's of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, during the early part of the 19th century, circa 1820. All pieces are well potted with an octagonal shape. The tureen has dolphin handles either side with the lid having a foo dog /lion handle to the top. The stand or base plate is recessed to support the tureen base centrally. The pattern is called "Japan Basket" and is a well known Mason's pattern, as illustrated on pages 83 and 84 in The Mason's collectors Club book " A Guide to Mason's patent Ironstone patterns, circa 1813-1848" . Mason's made many different shaped tureens as illustrated on Pages 145 and 155 of Godden's Guide to Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares published by the Antique Collectors' Club. The pattern is beautifully hand painted over a printed pattern with bold enamels of Cobalt Blue, burnt orange and green all in various shades. All three pieces are marked, with the tureen and its lid having a wide spaced MASON'S blue printed crown and banner and the stand having the circular impressed "Patent Ironstone China" mark, dating them all to the late Georgian period. The printed mark dates to circa 1825 and the impressed mark is probably earlier by about ten years, circa 1815. It is good to have all three pieces together, as the tureens have often lost there base plates over time. This is a beautiful piece of Mason's in great condition, for display or use.
