Georgian Mason's Ironstone Sauce Tureen and Cover Gilded Rose Japan Pattern
$1,526.88per set

About
This is a superb Ironstone Sauce Tureen, complete with lid, made by Mason's of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, during the early part of the 19th century, circa 1815.
This tureen is well potted with a rectangular curved shape on a low foot. There are two moulded animal head handles to the base and a shaped knob to the top of the lid. The lid has an end cutaway for the insertion of a serving spoon.
The pattern is called " Gold Rose Japan" which is a rare and beautiful chinoiserie Mason's pattern, as illustrated on page 90 in The Mason's collectors Club book " A Guide to Mason's patent Ironstone patterns, circa 1813-circa 1848" . This piece is particularly well hand painted with many different colored enamels of cobalt blue, green, burnt orange, red and pink, all in different shades and with much applied hand gilded detail and highlights. Tureens of the same shape and period are illustrated on Pages 140 and 141 of Godden's Guide to Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares published by the Antique Collectors' Club.
Both the base and the lid are marked with impressed Mason's marks, the base with the circular "Patent Ironstone China" and the lid with the single line "Mason's Patent Ironstone China" dating the piece to circa 1815-1820 (probably closer to 1815) the English, Late Georgian period.
This is a very beautiful piece of early Mason's in lovely condition, for display or use.
