Georgian Mason's Ironstone Large Dish or Bowl Gilded Japan Basket, circa 1818

US$564.39

About

This is a very good large bowl or serving dish in the gilded Japan basket pattern, made by Mason's Ironstone, England in the early 19th century, circa 1815-1820. Early Mason's bowls of this size and shape tend to be harder to find. The bowl is nominally square with an everted rim and canted corners. The bowl makes a good display piece or could be used for fruit etc. with many possible uses. This bowl is decorated in one of Mason's most popular chinoiserie patterns called "Japan Basket" showing baskets of flowers with floral sprig borders to the rim. The pattern has also hand gilded highlights. The pattern would have had a printed outline, then hand painted in various bold colored enamels in different shades. The pattern is fully documented and shown on plates on page 103 of A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Masons Collectors' Club. The base of the bowl has the straight line impressed mark - Masons's Patent Ironstone China, which dates this piece to the late Georgian period circa 1815-1820.
