Georgian Mason's Ironstone Large Bowl in Red Scale People Pattern, Circa 1815

US$2,068.09

About

This is a beautiful Mason's Ironstone pottery large bowl in the very decorative Red Scale Sacrificial Lamb, oriental people pattern, produced by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1813-1815. This large bowl is well potted and circular, sitting on a low foot. The bowl is decorated in one of Mason's chinoiserie oriental people patterns, called Red Scale / Sacrificial Lamb, which is also one of the earliest patterns, hand painted in a free flowing manner in different coloured enamels of varying shades, possibly over an under-glaze printed outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 77 of Mason's Pattern book published by The Mason's Collectors' Club The base has the printed black mark of the large crown and widely spaced M A S O N S, together with the circular impressed mark " PATENT Ironstone China" which is recorded as being probably the earliest impressed factory mark indicating a date of circa 1813-1817 as ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period. This bowl exhibits the free flowing boldness of the hand painting that is seen on the early Mason's pieces, though the inside of the bowl base was either sparsely painted originally or the painted enamels are very worn from well over 200 years of use. Overall a delightful, large and very early Mason's Bowl which displays very well.
