George Jones Majolica Turquoise Sardine Box, Duck and Fish, English, ca. 1874

US$3,285

About

George Jones Majolica Turquoise Sardine Box, Duck (actually a Grebe) and Fish, English, ca. 1874, the box molded in high relief with a salmon on each of the four sides, each corner with molded coral forming the raised feet, the lid with simulated water glazed in blue and turquoise, surmounted with a grebe feeding with a sardine forming the knop, the reverse with molded British Registry Lozenge for 28 March 1874, and impressed 'GJ' monogram encircled, with painted design number '3383,' which corresponds to the entry, 'Sardine box, fish and coral sides, lid with grebe,' in the George Jones Majolica Pattern Books preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Wedgwood Collection, Barlaston, UK.* This design very rarely turns up with the sardine in the grebe's beak; here, it is present and intact. For thirty years, we have been among the world's preeminent specialists in fine antique majolica. Book References: *1-Robert Cluett, GEORGE JONES CERAMICS: 1861-1951.
