George Jones Majolica Dog Bowl, Glazed in Turquoise, Pink Interior, Dated 1884

US$2,395

About

George Jones Majolica dog bowl, with green glazed acanthus leaves on a turquoise ground, bordered in ochre, with applied bowed cartouches above each of the scrolled feet, the interior glazed in pink, the reverse with impressed 'J' for 1884 and painted design number to thumbprint reserve, '2514,' which corresponds to the entry 'Dog Bowl with three feet, acanthus leaves on....' in the George Jones Majolica Pattern Numbers Books, Wedgwood Archives, and partially reprinted in Robert Cluett's George Jones ceramics. Additionally, the identical piece is pictured along with a full entry in the Karmason Library of the Majolica International Society, ID Number: 661, KL Number: KL000649 with the designation: RARE. A Note on the Victorian’s Love of Dogs: Today we may view an ornate Victorian majolica dog bowl as lavish, but the British upper classes of the time did not. In fact, most young ladies presented at court carried a small dog. This fashion was in large part due to the monarch herself, Queen Victoria, whose devotion to dogs is evidenced in paintings, photos, and particularly her own writings and countless journal entries. For 30 years we have been among the world's preeminent specialists in the finest antique majolica. Robert Cluett, GEORGE JONES CERAMICS: 1861--1951. Atglen, PA: Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 1998, p. 270. *George Jones Majolica Pattern Numbers from the Wedgwood Archive reprinted in R. Cluett, Appendix 4, pp. 269-272.
