About

Sofia Israel A bright representative of Moscow conceptualists, Sofia Israel is one of the few artists who were able to incarnate the ideas of the conceptualist school in ceramics while developing a unique vision of its romantic direction. She is known for her outstanding pottery techniques, as well as for her quirky elaborate sculptures. Before graduating from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, she studied mathematics in Moscow, which has definitely influenced her style for example, the deconstruction in her works is thought out with the logical precision. Her series “Tryokhetazhny mat” (“Трехэтажный мат”) demonstrates a great mix of a virtuoso pottery and conceptualism. The title literally means “Three-Story Cursing” and refers to the famous Russian skill in swearing intricately and profusely. Israel’s ceramics pile up separate pieces much like an angry person rages out in a stream of obscenities, accumulating various slurs. Indeed, the intentional accumulation of heterogeneous media and ready-made pieces is typical of conceptual art. In “Tryokhetazhny mat” lamps, teapots, bowls, and plates are assembled in many different ways. Together, they create a mess, yet, Sofia Israel’s mess is a clever and constructed one. Far from random, each accumulation of objects reaches an equilibrium, following the rules of geometry and composition.
