Bertoncello Italian Sculpture Vase Glazed Ceramic Design Roberto Rigon

About the Item

We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Innovative and original ceramic vase; it is made of clay and finished with a special colored glaze that makes the object particularly attractive; the vase has an unusual and strange shape that emphasizes the volume, while the side holes and the jagged edge give lightness and plasticity to the whole; a small octagonal base subtly lifts the piece from the surface on which it sits; the body of the vase is an off-white with light tobacco-colored hues, a favorite combination of its creator: Giovanni Bertoncello. It was produced between 1969 and 1974 by the company Bertoncello Ceramiche from a design by Giovanni Bertoncello in collaboration with the well-known artistic innovator Roberto Rigon. Bertoncello Ceramiche was founded in 1956 in Schiavon, in the province of Vicenza (Italy) by partners Lini, Marco Pizzato, and Giovanni Bertoncello, with the name of "LPB", soon changed its name to "Bertoncello Ceramiche d'Arte" and the management remained exclusive to Giovanni Bertoncello who, thanks to his artistic and entrepreneurial skills, led the company to achieve great success both in Italy and on the foreign market, so much so that in the early seventies the factory employed over 30 people. Thanks to the experience gained, Bertoncello ceramics soon became a solid reality that stood out from the many competing firms. Unfortunately, not much is known about the company because all of its catalogs and archives were destroyed when the company closed in 1999. The forms of Bertoncello's ceramics are often very sculptural and geometric and look like small studies or maquettes for massive modernist sculptures yet to be built, reminiscent of the works of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth and the architecture of the time. The painter and ceramist Roberto Rigon was born in Friola di Pozzoleone, in the province of Vicenza, in 1929. Already devoted to drawing and painting, he attended for a short period the "Royal School of Art for Ceramics" of Nove, a pupil of Giovanni Petucco and Andrea Parini. At the age of eighteen, he began working at the "S.I.C.A." factory. After some experiences at other manufactures in the Vicenza area, he began a fruitful collaboration with "Bertoncello Ceramiche d'Arte", together with Giovanni Bertoncello is lavished in pictorial and sculptural research with lines from geometric references and characterized mainly by color due to the wise use of enamels, were born so unique and unrepeatable objects, our vase sculpture is an exceptional example. The object is in excellent condition. Measures diameter cm.34, height cm.16. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.

Particular and original German ceramic vase colored with a beautiful shade of red and a dark and vivid black; it has a simple shape but at the same time innovative and modernist; the beautiful and bright colors are balanced and proportioned respecting a minimalist design; the glazing of the vase was obtained by first laying down one color, proceeding to fix it by firing it in the kiln, then the same procedure was carried out for the other color; on the bottom is the mark "W. Germany"; it was produced between 1968 and 1971 in a craft workshop in the city of Dresden (then in East Germany), an important center for the production of porcelain and ceramics.
