Unusual 18th Century Venetian Center Piece in Carved Walnut Wood, Circa 1780

Although the Rococo in France (where the style originated) lasted from roughly 1725 to 1760, other countries in Europe produced period art and furniture until the late 18th century. One such country was Italy and in particular, Venice, where this unusual carved walnut centerpiece was hand-carved, circa 1780. A large shell-form bowl with volute leaf embellishments is being held by three putti emerging from an undulating base. The wave pattern is reminiscent of a foaming sea, further indicated by the stylized dolphin tails emerging from the spray. All of the tails are textured with a lozenge-patterned background, protruding as high-relief elements. On the underside, the scalloped tips of the water swing down in three areas, forming well-disguised feet. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Queen Anne English Britannia silver porringer, an addition to our 18th century silverware collection.
This antique Queen Anne Britannia standard silver* porringer has a circular rounded form.
The lower portion of this 18th century silver porringer bowl is embellished with chased alternating fluted decoration accented with engraved foliate motifs.
The upper portion is encircled with a chased rope twist decorated girdle flanked with engraved foliate and scalloped motifs.
The decoration to the anterior surface incorporates a cartouche bordered with scale motif diaper pattern and large scrolling designs, all surmounted with a figural cherub mask between a pair of wings.
The cartouche displays a contemporary engraved coat of arms with scrolling leaf mantling and helm, all below a crest of an escallop.
This silver porringer bowl is fitted with two cast S-scroll handles, featuring plain thumbpieces and scrolling terminals.
The underside of the porringer bears the engraved initials 'RR'.
Britannia silver, The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver).

Antique Thai Celadon Stemmed Dish Sukhothai Sawankhalok

A celadon stemmed dish with underglaze deep blue decoration from Sukhothai (a former Kingdom in nowadays central Thailand) circa 14th-16th century. The pedestal dish was a typical ceramic output from Sawankhalok region, likely one of the kilns in Sri Sachanalai that thrived during 14th-15th century. Sukhothai ceramics made a large portion of export from Asia during that period due to the political policy in Ming Dynasty that banned the ocean faring (the so called Ming Gap). This stemmed dish, likely an export item, was modeled in a Classic Chinese form. The under-glaze deep blue decorations depicting the scrolling vines and flowers, as well as the archaic band around the base, are also reminiscent to the designs found in blue and white porcelain in Ming dynasty. The piece shows a fine crackles and age wear on the dish surface, an indication of appropriate patina. Under the reddish slip paint of the base, the gray paste can be discerned in small area, which is also a characteristic of the Thai celadon...
