Georgian Baluster Pewter Quart Tankard GR Stamped, English Circa 1760

About

This is a good mid-18th century pewter tankard or mug with a baluster shape, fully stamped with GR and other markings. This tankard has a lovely baluster pear shaped body on a flared skirt base and fairly deep top rim. The body has a double scribed circle just below its mid point. It has a characteristic sweeping loop "S" handle with an indented thumb rest to the top. This is a substantial heavy piece weighing about 1.2 Kg unpacked Various markings are stamped around the top rim reading left to right; QUART - the capacity mark , became a legal requirement in 1836. Crown, with GR 545 under and K/23 to the right To the left of the handle: Crown with GR and W under To the right of the handle : Impressed Cross; probably a makers touch mark. Notes: The GR is an official weights and measures verification mark which became a legal requirement from 1836 for tankards and mugs in use. The presence of this mark does not signify the item is post 1836 as many vessels that were in use were marked retrospectively. *********************************** FREE GLOBAL SHIPPING ************************************
