About

In Italy there is an expression, "senso dello spettacolo" -- sense of spectacle; showmanship. This is a quality Antonia Campi (born 1921) has never lacked, in her very long career as a brilliant and highly idiosyncratic form-giver. She has been responsible for some of the most audacious shapes to ever emerge from Italy, a place known for its fertile invention of audacious shapes. This vase is only nominally a holder of flowers. Although it does a perfectly good job of holding flowers, its form is everything. Antonia Campi's designs for the Societa Ceramica Italiana di Laveno appear no less wildly bizarre today than they did 65 years ago. Her combination of gentle surrealism with a kind of updated, eroticized baroque was very much in keeping with the zeitgeist of 1950s Italy (Carlo Mollino and Federico Fellini being among the guiding lights of this particular aesthetic). A piece like this stretches the metaphorical limits of everyday objects, and graces the ordinary with a sophisticated level of fantasy and visual poetry. Underside marked "Lavenia / 4-55 / MADE IN ITALY".
