Royal Worcester Pair of Persian Porcelain Vases, Blush Ivory Japanese Lotus 1890

US$3,950per set

About

This is a superb pair of vases made by Royal Worcester in the year 1890. The vases are shaped in the Persian style and have a blush ivory Japanese lotus decoration. The original Worcester factory was founded in the mid-18th century and belongs to the group of famous pioneering potteries in Britain. It went through various changes and take overs, and in the mid-19th century it merged with Chamberlains and Grainger, both earlier split-offs, taking the new name "Royal Worcester". The factory distinguished itself with its extremely high quality of artwork, hiring the best artists and always coming up with very vivid designs full of flowers, birds and fruits. It was in operation until the early 21st century but eventually succumbed to the changing times. These vases are shaped in the "Persian" style with shape number 1200, which was first brought out in the year 1886. This style was influenced by the wonderful Persian artefacts that found their way to Britain and that soon became an influence on British design. You can see the finely carved and reticulated shapes on the surface of the neck of the vase. The decoration on the body of the vase is done in the "blush ivory" style, which became popular in the late 19th century and early 20th century. This was based on the Art Nouveau movement in Europe and Aesthetic Movement in Britain, creating designs based on natural shapes rather than the familiar ornamental shapes from the Victorian times. The production process was complex; items received a glossy glaze on the inside, and a matt glaze on the outside. Colors were achieved by spraying an apricot-colored glaze near the rims with the newly invented "aerograph machine" - this was one of the first examples of air brushing. The motif of this decoration consists of beautiful East Asian lotus flowers with raised gilt, clearly inspired by the Japanese art that became popular around the same period. Raised gilt lines separate the delicate cream, brown and pink colors. The vases have the puce Royal Worcester mark on the underside with the shape number 1200, as well as a registration number and the year cipher for the year 1890. Condition report: Both vases are in excellent antique condition without any damage, repairs, crazing or significant wear. There is a spot of kiln grit from production baked into one of the handles, and there is some wear on the top rims. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Dimensions: 34cm (13.25") tall, 18cm (7") wide at widest point.
