Pair of White Opeline Baluster Vases with Floral Band and Gilt

About the Item

This pair of vases we attribute to Baccarat. They are part of a recently acquired group formed by a Swiss collector in the 1920s. The other items were all Baccarat. The baluster body is freely painted with wild flowers and leaves, it is gilded in bands and on the neck. The Gilding is rubbed. Unusually the frilled rim is edged with a pink and white latticino "Candy Cane" of unusually delicate workmanship.

Another shaped panel presents two charming birds on a branch painted by a free, fluid hand with shading and brushstrokes. Watery blue peonies, auspicious symbols of springtime and prosperity, emerge from a dense cobalt blue background of tight arabesques motifs arranged in a most delicate composition. The lip of the vase presents a thunder pattern frieze, symbol of life, and a mark on the bottom. This pair of Japanese blue and white porcelain vases...
