About the Item

We are pleased to offer this exquisite pair of blue and white Dutch Delft vases hand-painted in shades of cobalt blue with a scene of songbirds on a rocky outcropping surrounded by flowering trees, butterflies, and a garden fence. The design is lively, and the hand-painting is beautifully done. Made circa 1780 the vases have the softly rounded octagonal shape which is traditional to the period. The undersides are mostly unglazed which is also traditional to many of the 18th century Delft factories. Dimensions: height 16.25" x diameter at widest point 7 Condition: Excellent Price: $4300 Place these blue and white vases in a room with other colors, and something magical happens: all the colors in the room come out more sharply. By putting the right items together, each enhances the other. I find that Blue and White in particular works in any setting, in a formal dining or living room, with yellow in a kitchen, and certainly with other Blue and White. History of Delft: The technique of making Delft was first described in writing by Gerrit Paape in "The Delft Pottery Maker," written in 1794. Dedicated to Lambertus Sanderus, the owner of De Porceleyne Claeuw (The Porcelain Claw). Delft faience began in the 17th century. Much of the finest Delft was produced in the Dutch city of Delft. The Delft potters began to coat their pots completely in a white tin glaze. They then began to cover the white tin-glaze with a clear glaze, giving depth to the fired surface and smoothness to cobalt blues. Over time they created a good resemblance to porcelain. By circa 1650, the technical skills of the potters and painters were much improved, and Delft began its golden age.
