An incredible example of the Naturalism of the 19th century.
This piece is very unusual by the color.
The poule de Houdan is an old French breed of domestic chicken named by her origin the commune of Houdan near Paris, this hens are all usually mottled black and white like this one.
It's very possible it's an early example of the production or a special order because all the others hens know on the market are white.
At the end of 19th century, Choisy le roi was one of the most important ceramics manufacture who worked with artists like Leon Arnoux, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, Hugues Protat.
Known for his realistic sculptures of farm animals and birds, Paul Comolera is included in the elite school of French Animaliers sculptors.
