This attractive decorative porcelain vase showcases playful rabbits in black hopping on circles in platinum and gold, the interpretations of the moon. Tsukimi or Moon Viewing festival, a harvest festival celebrated in Japan, dates back to Heian period (794 to 1185). It comes from the Japanese folklore that rabbits live on the moon. The story is that the Old Man of the Moon came down on earth one night to see who was the kindest of his three friends, the monkey, the fox and the rabbit. He appeared as a begger in front of them while they were sitting around fire and asked them if they could spare him some food. The fox offered him a fish, the monkey brought him lots of fruits, the rabbit told him that he doesn't have any food to offer him, but he would offer himself to the old man, to be cooked in the fire so that the old man can eat him. The Old Man of the Moon immidiately transformed back to his original form and said that the rabbit is the kindest among them and he took the rabbit with him to the moon. The story is honored in Japan to this day.
This attractive porcelain vase comes in a custom-made wooden case signed by the artist.

“Fired-on gold,” his signature style, highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as five-ten firings. This artist's profile is available upon request.
