About

A stunning, very large distinctive vase, fashioned of heavy etched glass with period cubism forms. This is another of our collection of pieces that were once used, and perhaps sold, through the legendary La Coupole Brasserie in Paris. Purchase a part of French history. This magnificent cubist Art Deco vase was designed by A Riecke. It is engraved with a geometric design, signed and dated. A. Riecke was responsible for the Art Deco glass decor of restaurant La Coupole. Signed and dated (often indicated as month, day and two digits for the year). La Coupole was founded in 1927 and once a leading center of artistic life. La Coupole is now the epitome of the grand Paris brasserie in Montparnasse. Former patrons included Josephine Baker, Henry Miller, Picasso, Dalí, Calder, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, among many others. Some of the artists painted on the columns, or added their creations to the decor. The term 'Cubist' was a derisive description by a critic of a geometric landscape painting done by Braque in 1908. Juan Gris, the originator of Collage, joined Picasso and Braque in 1910.
