Georgian Mason's Ironstone Vase or Jar in Gilded Fence Japan Pattern, circa 1815

US$673.46

About

This is a rare ironstone vase or jar made by Mason's, Lane Delph, Staffordshire Potteries, England in its earliest period of Ironstone production, circa 1813-1815. The vase is well potted, having a cylindrical body with a smaller diameter high neck which tapers slightly outwards. The piece has two gilded dragon head face handles, one either side which is a very decorative detail. The vase is boldly hand decorated in the gilded " Fence Japan " pattern. This is one of Mason's early chinoiserie patterns, heavily influenced at the time by the decoration on imported Chinese porcelain. It is hand painted using various enamel shades of blue, Iron reds, orange and beige. The pattern has then been embellished with rich hand gilded detail in many places including the dragon head handles. Similar examples in the same pattern are illustrated in Plate 246, page 193 of Geoffrey Godden's " Guide to Masons China and the Ironstone Wares" published by The Antique Collectors Club. This is a very early piece of Mason's Ironstone, having the circular impressed mark stating "Patent Ironstone China". This mark is probably the earliest of the impressed marks dating the piece to circa 1813-1815, with Mason's Ironstone production only starting in 1813. Overall a very early, rare and decorative usable Piece of Mason's Ironstone.
