Ceramic Vase with Volcanic and Metallic Glaze by Beatrice Wood

About the Item

A bespoken ceramic vase by American artist and studio potter Beatrice Wood (1893-1998). The piece, circa 1960-80s, is covered in a beautiful turquoise color volcanic glaze with splashes of metallic gold luster patches. Signed on the bottom "Beato" and 'BWTF708". The contrast of golden luster with the textured turquois glaze is a combination of two glazing techniques favored by the artist. The piece, with its classic form and color, evokes a visual of ancient lusterware from Mideastern civilization. Beatrice Wood was a multi-disciplinary artist and author. In her long life and career, she was known as Mama of Dada, an avant-garde artist, a potter, an author, and an inspiration. Her long career with pottery is distinguished by a signature style of in-glaze luster that draws the metallic salts to the surface of the glaze by starving the kiln of oxygen.
