Royal Worcester Porcelain Jardiniere, Gilt, Blush Ivory and Masks, 1892-1920

US$3,700

About

This is a superb jardiniere, or large plant pot, made by Royal Worcester some time between 1892 and 1920. The jardiniere has a gilt ground and stunning moulding containing masks of lion heads and satyrs in the "blush ivory" style.. Jardinieres were used for large plants or small yucca or palm trees in the often stuffy Victorian and Edwardian homes; these plants provide fresh air and decoration. Worcester was one of the first potteries in Britain to create items in porcelain. Alongside other great potteries such as Derby, Chelsea and Bow, they pioneered a new industry that would grow out to be huge in the following century. In later years Worcester went through many different ownerships and styles, and ultimately it became the Royal Worcester factory, continuing operations into the early 21st Century. This pot is in the "blush ivory" style, which became popular in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. The blush ivory style was based on the Art Nouveau movement in Europe and Aesthetic Movement in Britain, creating designs based on natural shapes rather than the familiar ornamental shapes from the Victorian times. The production process was complex; items received a glossy glaze on the inside, and a matt glaze on the outside. Colours were achieved by spraying an apricot-coloured glaze near the rims with the newly invented "aerograph machine" - this was one of the first examples of air brushing. What is unusual about the decoration of this item is that the ground is gilt and the moulded decorations are applied in blush ivory, rather than the other way around as is usual. The decorations consist of a richly moulded band around the jardiniere with masks of lion heads and satyrs surrounded by scrolls and acanthus leaves. The body of the jardiniere has raised panels in gilt. The artwork of the gilding and the blush ivory mouldings is superb. The pot has the puce Royal Worcester mark on the underside with the shape number 1310, as well as a hand written workmans number. Very unusually for Royal Worcester the mark is not dated so we can't know exactly which year it was made. CONDITION REPORT The jardiniere is in perfect antique condition without any damage, repairs or crazing, and just very light wear as visible in the pictures. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures! DIMENSIONS 17.5cm (7") high, 27cm (10.5") wide, 20cm (8") diameter.
