Sarreguemines Majolica Jardiniere in the Japonisme Style, 1880-1890

About the Item

A gorgeous turquoise blue Majolica jardiniere made by the French manufactory Sarreguemines circa 1880-1890. The jardiniere is decorated in the eclectic Japonisme-style with beautifully hand-painted birds among pine branches, faux cloisonne, and cobalt blue elephant handles. Though originally developed and popularized in England, Majolica had a far-reaching influence on ceramicists throughout the world, with wares appearing in the United States and the Continent during the late nineteenth century. This jardiniere, made by the French manufactory Sarreguemines in 1880-1890, displays the exoticizing and eclectic Japonisme style that became popular in the West at the end of the century. The Sarreguemines jardiniere’s style and colors share a similar language with its English counterparts, revealing that the French were undergoing something of a majolique manie themselves. • Early 19th Century Wedgwood Tricolor Jasperware Jardiniere
    By Wedgwood
    Located in Fort Lauderdale, FL
A Wedgwood jardiniere with lilac and sage details on a white jasperware ground. Jasperware is perhaps the quintessential Wedgwood clay body and is even considered by some to be a ceramic development on par with porcelain. Originally developed in the 1770s as dyed stoneware bodies (the most ubiquitous of which is pale blue) with applied white figurative decoration in imitation of cameos from the Ancient World, jasperware quickly expanded to a plethora of colorways as per Wedgwood innovation standards. This jardiniere, with lilac and sage decoration on white jasperware ground, is part of Wedgwood’s tricolor jasperware...

An Iznik-style vase made by Edmé Samson et Cie after a 16th-century Turkish bottle vase in the collection of the Musée d'Ecouen. The vase’s bulbous body is decorated in a red, cobalt blue, turquoise, and green floral design of saz leaves, roses, and tulips. The neck is decorated with delicate floral sprays. The design is highlighted with gilding throughout, and is intentionally sparse around the turquoise area of the neck to mimic the wear of the 16th-century vase after which it was modelled. As with many other Samson Iznik...

  • Six Wedgwood Majolica Argenta 'Lincoln' Pattern Dessert Dishes
    By Wedgwood
    Located in Fort Lauderdale, FL
Six Wedgwood majolica Argenta palette ‘Lincoln' pattern dessert plates with finely molded maroon prunus blossoms and dark taupe pine branches surrounded by a yellow Greek key border. The dishes are decorated in the japonisme style and feature the “Three Friends of Winter” motif, an Asian artistic convention showing the pine, plum, and bamboo together to represent steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. The Wedgwood factory introduced muted Argenta glazes to its majolicas in the 1880s to keep up with ever-changing fashions. The Argenta glaze color palette was more subdued than that of traditionally vibrant majolica, and was thus more appealing to the Aesthetic Movement japonisme style that pervaded the market. These Argenta majolica dessert dishes...

This pitcher and tumbler, designed by Wedgwood in 1877, is a unique example of majolica pottery. Most majolica pieces are decorated: adorned with Renaissance-inspired designs, heavily ornamented in the Victorian taste, or covered in Japanese motifs. This pitcher and tumbler, on the other hand, is simply glazed in earth brown and cobalt majolica...
