Japanese Contemporary Green Gold Red Mizusashi Water Jar by Porcelain Artist

About the Item

Japanese contemporary porcelain mizusashi water jar, hand-painted in green, red and gold featuring gilded panels of the mythicalChinese dragon, an amalgam of nine beasts. Believed to have power over rain, the dragon makes an oblique reference to the contents of the water jar. With its matching lid, this piece is classified as a tomobuta (matching lid) type. The exterior palette is playfully repeated on the reverse side of the lid. This is the work by highly decorated master porcelainartist of the Kutani region who remains active today in his mid-1980s. A long-time aficionado of the tea ceremony, the artist’s kiln adjoins a traditional tea ceremony room that he has named “Sen Shin An” (soul cleansing hermitage). Mizusashi is a lidded fresh water jar used in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony to replenish the boiling kettle and rinse the tea bowls. First to enter and last to leave the tea ceremony room, the mizusashi serves as a focal point in the aesthetic scheme of an otherwise meditative and somber ceremony with a history that goes back more than ten centuries. Throughout the years, the artist has created numerous mizusashi and tea bowls for the traditional tea ceremony. His work is currently on display in the Multiversity Gallery of the Museum of Anthropology of the University of British Columbia. This stunning piece comes in a custom-made wooden box signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 6 in, D 6.75 in
