"St. Mark's Horses," Large Sculptural Rondel with Gold Glaze by Leo Lentelli

US$2,900

About

Dramatically depicting the grand row of bronze horses that sit atop St. Mark's Basilica in Venice -- looted from Constantinople in the 1200s -- this important Art Deco bas relief was sculpted by Leo Lentelli on the eve of World War II in 1940. Best known for his sculpture at Rockefeller Center, Lentelli exhibited a series of rondels -- most depicting nude figures -- at the New York City Council for Art Week. Lentelli was born in Bologna and trained in Rome, before immigrating to America at the age of 24. He achieved fame for his work on the reredos at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York and his public sculpture for the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. Lentelli sculpted panels and bas-reliefs for many distinguished buildings, including the Steinway Building in New York.
