Baby Hand-Carved Cameo Ring in Sardonyx Shell & 18-Karat Gold by Cindy Sherman
"Baby" hand carved sardonyx shell and set in 18-karat light pink gold cameo ring by Cindy Sherman. With cameo, Lizworks founder Liz Swig takes on one of the oldest forms of portraiture, dating back to ancient Greece when the profiles of the Gods of Olympus were first carved in agate and completely reimagines it through the vision of two of the most important contemporary artists working today. “The exploration of the cameo as a contemporary canvas brought me immediately to the work of Catherine Opie and Cindy Sherman,” Swig says. “To see their work three dimensionally carved and seductively sculpted in the tradition of the cameo is a complete thrill.” Opie’s intimate, highly-personal imagery explores universal themes of family and identity, while Sherman, who ignited an exuberant new body of work when she took her Instagram feed from private to public, invites us to consider the cameo as the original selfie. The formality of the cameo is both revered and turned on its head. The cameos are hand carved in Italy in small editions under the vision a third-generation cameo maker in Torre del Greco, where shell cameos have been produced for centuries. Set in gold and ornately adorned, each individual cameo conjures up an entire world unto itself mesmerizing, discrete, and complete. Cindy Sherman is an American photographer and film director, whose transformative self-portraits are largely concerned with problematic of femininity, addressing stereotypes of women in film, magazines, television and the culture at large. “I like cameos, especially the idea of dark, strange ones. I also like the idea of tiny objects being art. It seemed like a good project for using my Instagram images since the files aren’t large enough files to blow up into photographs, and they also concentrate on being mainly portraits. It’ll make it more fun to wear it as a piece of art.”.

About The Maker
Founded in 2014 by Liz Swig, LIZWORKS transforms the ordinary in to the truly extraordinary through collaborations with some of the world’s most prominent contemporary artists. These collaborations create one-of-a-kind works of art that form new mediums, shift perceptions, and bring a powerful new experience to audiences. Her most recent project was a revolutionary, wholly immersive oatmeal experience in collaboration with design luminaries Humberto and Fernando Campana. The project produced two limited edition bowls – one in cast bronze and the other in terracotta. Other notable LIZWORKS projects have included a porcelain water pitcher by Kara Walker, and dinnerware by Jeff Koons featuring images from his Banality series, both created with the fabled French brand Bernardaud. With the artists Vik Muniz, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Paola Pivi, LIZWORKS produced a series of signed, limited-edition eyewear that invited viewers to quite literally see the world through the artists’ eyes. A renowned patron, collector, and a formidable fundraiser, Liz Swig has served in leadership roles on the Boards of Directors of several prestigious cultural institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Film Society of Lincoln Center, Creative Time, and the American Friends of the Israel Museum. For the past few years, she has channeled her passion, her wit, her instinct for making connections and her inimitable ability to get things done into LIZWORKS.
