18th Century Italian Fragment with Copper, Garnets, and Gold Mica on Calcite

About the Item

18th century Italian fragment decorated with natural forming copper, garnets, and gold mica on an optical calcite base. The Italian fragment originally came from a piece in a church in Tuscany. It is then mounted onto the optical calcite base using the natural-forming copper and garnets, giving the illusion that the sculptural piece is gravity-defying. It is then is embellished with gold mica on the side of the piece that coordinates with the gold-leaf fragment. The matrimony of the minerals and artifact creates a piece that appears to have evolved together over time. Each detail looks as though it had organically grown from the fragment artifact — perfecting the art of illusion and evoking man-made evolution. Interpreting the past to create a piece entirely original, evolving in its own right.
