A pair of French painted cast iron doorstops or bookends in the form of heraldic lions, circa 1930s and retaining the original painted and gilded finish. The lion is a common image used in heraldry. It traditionally symbolizes courage, nobility, royalty, strength, stateliness and valor. The lion is historically regarded as the “king of beasts”. This pair are shown in the Sejant erect position, sitting with the front paws raised, resting on a shield, facing each other. They are painted in metallic tones of gold, bronze, and silver. The maned lions sit on raised plinths. Measures: 12 in. H x 2 in. W x 8 in. L Weighing a heavy 6 pounds each. Surface wear and light rust as is expected.
