"Two Athletes in Unity, " Unique 1930s Italian Art Deco Sculpture with Male Nudes

About the Item

Quite extraordinary, this bronze depicting two nude athletes side by side, their arms out streched in common cause, was sculpted by an Italian artist in the 1930s, perhaps in connection to the construction of what is now known as Foro Italico between 1928 and 1938 in Rome. The Foro was inspired by the Roman forums of the imperial age and was constructed in part to host the 1940 Olympics, which did not transpire due to the eruption of World War II. Here, the figures almost look like they are in the midst of a dance, though their facial expressions are serious, almost severe. The two male figures originally held an emblem or figure, perhaps a small figure of an athlete or a flame, which is now missing.

  • "Male Athlete with Kettlebell", Rare Bronze Sculpture with Male Nude by Seifert
    By Franz Seifert
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
This highly rare bronze of a nude male athlete preparing to left a heavy kettlebell weight was sculpted by an Austrian artist, Franz Seifert, in 1922. Although Seifert is known for his nude figures straining to accomplish physical tasks -- such as carrying a large bucket or splitting a stone -- this sculpture is the only example known to exist. A decade after this sculpture was cast, Seifert carved a marble portrait of Siegfried Marcus, inventor of the gasoline-powered car, for a monument in Vienna, which includes a nude male figure in bas relief racing forward on the upper edge of an automobile wheel. He also created a large sculpture grouping honoring Empress Elizabeth...

A remarkable depiction of a strong, muscled nude male figure bent over in a monumental effort to move a large stone, this sculpture was made by the Hungarian-American sculptor Henry Schoenbauer. By the 1920s, many sculptors had created some version of "Man Against Nature," typically a an exaggeratedly strong male figure, often nude, working to lift a rock, pull a rope, or labor against impossible odds. Schoenbauer's "Stone Lifter...
