About the Item
Sculptural 18th century Italian wood chalice decorated with calcite crystals in sphalerite on a Lucite base. The hand carved and painted chalice is from a church in Liguria, Italy. The calcite crystals formation comes from Elmwood Mine, Tennessee.
It is an example of the world's finest crystallized calcite. With the unusual formation of sphalerite, it is unequaled by those from any other part of the world (referenced from the "American Mineral Treasure" book, pg. 337). The calcite crystal emulates bread and is mounted onto the hand carved chalice. Together, they symbolize the Eucharist, a Christian/Catholic rite that is considered a sacrament or ordinance in most churches. It is when bread and wine are consecrated and shared hence the hand-carved chalice and crystal formation.
The piece is put together by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the artist and creative director of Interi. The date of manufacture reflects when she created the piece and the period shows that the chalice is originally 18th century.
The wood chalice has been joined together with calcite crystals in matrix to create a new sculptural work of old and new, creating a piece that appears to have evolved together over time. Interpreting the past to create a piece entirely original, evolving in its own right. Through the preservation of the ecclesiastical artifact, it carries historical prominence and significance while being transformed into a contemporary work of art. Rococo meets organic modern.
