"Pan" Sculpture by Michel Anasse

US$7,500

About

This beautiful representation of a flute-playing "Pan" was created in the mid-1960s by the idiosyncratic French artist Michel Anasse, whose work as a sculptor and ceramist is lately re-attracting much interest in Europe. Especially in the 1960s, the inventive Anasse was devoted to iron as a medium, hammering it and welding it until it yielded sculptures of great delicacy and expressiveness. Most of this work was figurative, all was grounded in fantasy. Notwithstanding that "Pan" as a subject was an appropriate choice for Anasse (whose studio is located in a part of southeastern France that in ancient times was colonized by the Greeks), "Pan" was not a figure returned to repeatedly by the artist, making this a rare piece.
