Pair of French Gilt Bronze Depictions of the Goddess Nike, circa 1810

About the Item

This arrestingly beautiful pair of gilt bronze depictions of Nike the goddess of victory seated on curule stools. They are near mirror images of each other. The arms are outstretched and may have once grasped poles surmounted with laurel wreaths. Nike is also called "winged victory" and was a symbol of imperial authority because of her association with success in war. As such her depiction was associated with the military victories of the French Republic and later those of Napoleon's conquests.
