Le vainqueur du combat de coqs by Alexandre Falguière

About

Patinated bronze sculpture titled Le vainqueur du combat de coqs (The Cock Fight Winner) by Alexandre Falguie`re (1831-1900). Signed on the base: A. Falguie`re. Foundry mark: Thie´baut fre`res (Paris, 1885-1894). Alexandre Falguie`re was trained in the workshop of the sculptor Franc¸ois Jouffroy at the E´cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He won the Prix de Rome in 1859, which allowed him to continue his studies at the Medici Villa, the French academy in Rome. Every year students were to send one of their works to Paris, and during his third year Falguie`re sent in the plaster of this sculpture as his submitted work. The sculpture, cast in bronze by Thie´baut Fre`res, found great success at the 1864 Salon. It falls within the then-emerging Neo-Florentine movement. Renaissance references, notably young masculine figures inspired by Donatello the sculptor, mixed with the classical inspiration of the subject. The piece was also presented during the Universal Expositions of 1867 and 1889. It is housed at the Orsay Museum in Paris. Bibliography: Pierre Kjellberg, Les bronzes du XIXe`me sie`cle, Paris, 1987, reprod. pp. 9 et 311 (Coll. J. Ginepro, Monaco), circa 1880. Dimensions: L 6.7 in, W 14 in, H 22.6 in. Dimensions: L 17 cm, W 36 cm, H 57.5 cm.
