“Le Trevail” French Antique Bronze Sculpture of Blacksmith by Maurice Constant
$2,400

About
With an exquisite polychromed patina, there is a complexity to this figure of “Le Trevail“ that is most striking. Utilizing a range of chemicals to bring varying hues of bronze, brown, gold and black to the surface, these were then carefully accentuated using pigments by the founder to achieve the rich palette presented in this figure. A product of the first quarter of the 20th century, it shows a distinct preference for Romantic Classicism in its total adherence to photographic realism, despite the clear influence of the Art Deco movement in the subject. With a heroic stance and a confident gaze, the figure is as comfortable in battle as he is in labor, a philosophical statement made evident in Constant's execution of the exact same figure fitted with a sword instead of a Hammer (see Berman).

Condition report:
Fine original patina with only minimal handling wear. Slight “wiggle“ at torso between upper and lower half, no restoration is needed, it is just the nature of the joining method. Very slight curve to base edge, does not sit perfectly flush. Cleaned, waxed and polished, in fine presentation-ready condition.
