Late 19th Century Art Nouveau Bronze Tray by Emile Vernier

US$847.11

About

Oval platter in patinated bronze decorated with a sculpted, bas-relief woman stretched out among reeds and cattails. She is nude, and behind her, a young cupid is gazing at her face her through the reeds. This scene, saturated with the sensuality of intertwined vegetation and human forms, is typical of Art Nouveau production. Although it is composed in distinctively contemporary language, the subject and layout of its figures is a clear echo of Venus and Cupid, especially 16th century interpretations by Titien (ex: Prado Museum, Madrid). Signed on the border: E. VERNIER. circa 1900. Dimensions: L 12.8 in, W 8.7 in H 0.4 in. Dimensions: L 32.5 cm, W 22 cm, H 1 cm. Literature E´mile Se´raphin Vernier (1852-1927) was a French sculptor and metal engraver. He made his debut at the Salon de l'Acade´mie des beaux-arts in 1876 and earned an honorable mention in 1886. He won several awards afterward such as a bronze medal at the Universal Exposition of 1900. Vernier was the president of the Socie´te´ des Artistes De´corateurs from 1905 to 1910. He was knighted in 1903 and then was inducted as an officer of the national order of the Legion of Honor. The Muse´e d'Orsay has several of his bronze, copper and gilt silver platters in its collection.
