Large Early 18th Century Carved Giltwood Cherub Statue from Italy

About the Item

This Italian giltwood cherub carving from the early 1700s is in great condition for its age. Standing at over three feet tall, the statue is quite large and realistic. Traces of red bole show through the gold leafing. The cherub is presented looking to the left. The left hand is stretched across the abdomen and finishes at the waist. The right hand is outstretched above the cherub’s shoulder. At one point in time, the cherub was possibly presenting an item. The cherub is clad in a draped piece of fabric, which shows excellent movement. The cloth is arranged around the cherub’s left shoulder/upper arm and continues around the back in a downward diagonal fashion. At the right hip, the fabric wraps around to the cherub’s midsection before finishing between the legs. The detail of the carvings are quite amazing. The cherub depicted in this statue is standing on a stylized rock formation and the jagged aspect of the rocks is on full display. Also, the curls of the cherub’s hair and the folds of the garment are very prominent. The proportions of his face are very well done, showing an expression of contentment, with mouth slightly open. Display this wonderful statue on a table or a pedestal and it will become the focal point of the room.
